Cardiac Arrest

Lastly, if the heart stops beating, it is called Cardiac Arrest. When the heart stops beating, it must be made to work again within 4 minutes. Otherwise, the person’s brain gets damaged permanently. Due to a massive heart attack or a prolonged heart failure that is when blood does not reach the heart with required speeds the heart beat may stop immediately.

Heart failure

In ordinary circumstances, the heart pumps the blood needed for the body into the blood vessels. But, in certain special conditions, as when the heart muscles become weak, the heart fails to pump the blood needed for the body. In such states, much blood will accumulate in the heart, causing too much pressure on the heart muscles. On account of this condition, the person may feel breathless, may have inflammation on the legs, his liver may grow or his neck nerves may become thick. To say it in a different manner, the heart failure is nothing but, the heart losing its capacity of pumping blood. The conditions of heart failure are the symptoms of indicating that the heart is subjected to too much of work.

Heart attack

If any part of the coronary artery is completely blocked and if the supply of blood to the heart suddenly stops, heart attack may happen. When the blood supplied by the coronary artery is suddenly stopped, that part of the heart to which the blood is denied, dies. It is called Myocardial Infarction in medical terminology. If a man is subjected to repeated chest pains, his heart gradually loses the capacity of pumping blood, finally leading to heart failure.

Angina

When the coronary artery becomes narrow only to a certain extent (not completely) and as the blood supply to the heart muscles is stopped, especially while doing physical labor, or when emotionally disturbed, the heart cannot withstand the strain and the person feels uncomfortable. This state is called Angina or Angina Pectoris. You may treat it as a cry of the heart that it can no more withstand this pain. This is indeed the warning signal that the heart sends out. Even if the blood supply to the heart comes down by 30% – 40%, the person does not get Angina, when he is taking rest; but, it strikes only when he is subjected to mental and physical strain.

3 kinds or 3 stages

Even women after the middle age have the chance of getting this disease. As per a survey conducted recently, even men of 30- 40 are being subjected to this disease. It is estimated that every 30 out of 1000 in our country are falling victim to this disease. We can assume that we are competing with the Westerners in this regard. We can divide the coronary heart disease into 3 kinds or 3 stages: Angina, Heart attack, Heart failure.

Physical stress and strain

And when the blood supply is less, the muscles of the heart do not receive sufficient quantity of oxygen and therefore the heart becomes less efficient. When a person who is in this state, is subjected to much mental or physical stress and strain, his heart cannot withstand the extra workload quickly. This kind of disease due to the narrowing and stiffening of coronary arteries is called the coronary heart disease. Usually, middle- aged men are prone to this disease. In America, 1 out of 5 of normally healthy men may get this disease when they reach 65 years of age.
