Because of various reasons, fatty substances – cholesterol or other organic substances – are deposited on the inner walls of the coronary arteries and they become thick and stiff. This disease of the coronary arteries is called Atherosclerosis. In ordinary circumstances, the inner walls of coronary arteries are smooth and shiny. But, when fats are deposited, they become rough and stiff. When this state continues, the arteries become narrow. Consequently, the supply of blood will be less and less.
The smaller blood vessels that branch out from the coronary arteries multiply their number and into smaller units to reach the blood needed by the heart. It is no exaggeration to say that the coronary arteries are the life- giving organ to the heart. Each one of these two coronary arteries is of 3mm in diameter and 10- 12 cm in length. Every hour, about 60-70 litres of blood will be pumped into heart muscles.
In order to function properly or to remain in the healthy state, the heart muscles too need blood like the muscles of all other organs of the body. Even if there is plenty of blood in the layer of the heart, the heart cannot utilize this blood for the use of its muscles. The heart gets the supply of blood needed for its muscles from the two small arteries called coronary arteries. These two coronary arteries branching off from the Aorta, which carries blood from the right and the other from the left, weave around the heart, joining like a crown. It is because of this crown- like structure, they are called coronary arteries.
If the throat infection occurs repeatedly often, the heart may get damaged in course of time. Middle class and the lower – middle class people are a prey to this disease. Rheumatic pains, fever and infection may also cause this disease. More information is given about coronary heart diseases in the ensuing chapter.
There are three different types of heart diseases in our country. Congenital heart diseases, Heart valves diseases, Coronary artery diseases. If the patients coming for medical treatment or surgery, 25% are congenital cases; 35% are valve cases; and the remaining 45% are coronary artery cases. 90% of the valve diseases are due to rheumatic heart diseases. These are because of throat infection. Whatever is the infection, if one small antibody is developed in the body that may damage even the heart? That is why nobody should neglect throat infection.
